George R.R. Martin’s latest televisual offering is coming soon

Nightflyers is a novella written by the Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin in 1980. In 1981 Martin expanded the story into a 30,000-word piece by order of his editor. In the longer version, the author put in extra backstory on the some characters, and introduced several secondary characters not named in the first version.

Nightflyers is set in the same fictional “Thousand Worlds” universe as many of Martin’s other works, including Dying of the LightSandkings, and A Song for Lya, among others.

Nightflyers was adapted into a movie in the 1980s but more recently it was been decided it deserves a revamp so, in 2017, a pilot was developed by Syfy. Since George R. R. Martin is tied to an exclusive contract with HBO for Game of Thrones he will not be involved in the production or writing for Nightflyers.

In December 2017 Jodie Turner-Smith was announced as being cast as Melantha Jhirl, much to the pleasure of George R. R. Martin who expressed his enthusiasm for the casting in his journal. Martin explained how this recent casting more accurately represented that character in the novella than the film did, which had cast a white actor.

Netflix will co-produce the show and will be releasing it in 2018. Watch out for more information as we have it, meanwhile watch the trailer below!
