As much as it may amaze you some people have yet to watch the movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series. (I know!) One of those folk is Chef Swasty on Twitter. Chef describes himself as “Conqueror of Greenland, heister of couches, bane of shitty-neighbors, YouTube chef, uneducated in movies” in his Twitter bio. His lack of magic was never on purpose- sometimes movies or fads can pass us by- but he certainly made up lost time by binge watching every single HP movie over the course of a few days. Live tweeting as he watched, his reactions during the emotional rollercoaster are just brilliant. The live Twitter thread is immense- as one can imagine- but the full thread can be found on Imgur.
For now, here are Chef Swasty’s hilarious reactions to the first two movies…
The eight episode mini series Gentleman Jack is set in 1832 West Yorkshire, when women were to be seen and not heard, and lesbianism was merely whispered about. Anne Lister’s endeavour to turn society on its head came about when she inherited her family home; in an attempt to breathe new life into the household, she undertook business and was in search of a wife.
The cast supporting Suranne Jones as Lister include Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as Lister’s prospective wife, Ann Walker; Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) as Lister’s sister, Marian; Timothy West (Bleak House) as their father Jeremy Lister, and playing their Aunt Anne will be Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Diary).
The series premieres on the 22nd of April 2019. Check out the trailer below!
The 1998 novel is narrated by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, “a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959.” Along with Anya Epstein, Barbara Kingsolver will be adapting her own novel for the screen- a boon for literary purists who are wary of screen adaptations which lose their essence in translation.
The novel was a Pulitzer prize finalist, and has been called ‘breathtaking’, full of ‘humour and love’, with Kingsolver named as one of the finest writers of her generation.
Mike Barker, director of Outlander and The Handmaid’s Tale has been hired for the project, to tell the story of a young boy named Jack Sawyer and his quest through a monstrous dimension to find the mystical title object that might cure his dying mother, and even save two worlds in the process.
The heartbreaking All the Light We Cannot See is set in World War II and tells the parallel stories of a French girl, who is blind, and a German boy. Marie-Laure and her father escape Paris to a seaside town when the Nazis arrive, carrying with them a precious jewel. Meanwhile German ophan, Werner is a self taught radio expert who is enlisted by the Nazis to use this ability against the French Resistance. As they both try and survive the devastation of the war, their lives collide in spectacular fashion.
Without posting spoilers, Season 1 came to a pretty finite end, but season 2 is taking the story in a new direction with a whole new cast and will be called The Haunting of Bly Manor. For the extra bookish among you, bonus points if you knew that was a location from the Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw, and it seems that book will be the inspiration for the new season.
