Netflix Adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame Coming with Idris Elba Starring

By May 24, 2018Adaptations, News

The 1831 novel by Victor Hugo the Hunchback of Notre Dame has been adapted several times for both stage and film throughout the years. The first adaptation came in 1911, but the most memorable is possible the Universal Studios adaptation in 1923 and Disney’s effort in 1996.

Now it’s to get another adaptation, a modern retelling in fact and it will star Idris Elba who is not only to star in the adaptation, but he’ll produce and direct it too!

The currently untitled project is being created by Netflix, which has in recent years become kings of the adaptation, and we’re certainly excited to see this modern take on a classic. The most recent adaptation is the Disney one but as with most Disney productions, it’s more Disney than true to the source material. The previous most notable one is the Universal one but it’s almost 100 years old, making it high time for a realistic adaptation. This new adaptation will be a modern retelling so is likely to also differ from the source material, but we’re looking forward to it nonetheless.

It’s reported that Michael Mitnick will be writing the script for the adaptation, which is a long way away yet and is still at the conception stage. Most people are familiar with the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, even those who have not read the Victor Hugo novel. If you’ve watched several adaptations but have never read the source material, maybe now is a great time to do before this new adaptation airs on Netflix.

The new adaptation is unlikely to air until at least 2019.
