All-star cast of King Lear is coming soon to the BBC

King Lear is coming to our televisions in 2018.

Sir Anthony Hopkins will play the titular character who descends into madness as the play develops.Lear’s daughters are played by Florence Pugh, Emily Watson, and Emma Thompson (as youngest to oldest respectively). Having decided to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, provided they each tell him why he is so loved, bad decisions are made, regrets are expressed, and two daughters manipulate and betray their father…

Further to the already wonderful cast a host of famous names join Hopkins, Thompson et al. Jim Broadbent plays the Earl of Gloucester, Sherlock star Andrew Scott is Gloucester’s son Edgar, while Chewing Gum actor John Macmillan plays illegitimate son Edmund.

Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter, former Doctor Who hero Christopher Eccleston and Outlander’s Tobias Menzies also join the cast along with New Tricks’ Anthony Calf and Rome’s Karl Johnson.

The all-star cast is bound to attract new fans, and hopefully bring some more appreciation for Shakespeare’s work.
King Lear will be appearing on BBC Two sometime in 2018, followed by its release on Amazon Prime.
