Joe Hill’s latest story to be adapted to screen is NOS4A2 (NOS4R2 in the UK)- a creepy, claustrophobic tale of Charles Manx and his Silver Wraith. The supernatural story follows a young woman, Vic McQueen (played by Ashleigh Cummings) who discovers she has the power to find lost things. This discovery puts her in the sights of Charlie Manx (played by Zachary Quinto), a supernatural ‘big bad’ who abducts children in his Rolls Royce Wraith.
Manx is an immortal who feeds off the souls of children, then abandons their remains at Christmasland – a frozen nightmare Christmas village that exists in Manx’s imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is outlawed. Manx finds his beloved world is threatened when Vic McQueen discovers she has a dangerous gift that could track down Manx and stop him for good.

The series will debut in the summer of 2019 on AMC.
The one-hour, ten-episode NOS4A2 are brought to us by author Joe Hill and executive producer and show runner Jami O’Brien (Fear the Walking Dead).
Hill said in a statement: “I couldn’t be more excited about the forthcoming adaptation of NOS4A2. I know it’s in good hands with showrunner Jami O’Brien: Her beautifully composed scripts show a writer at the height of her powers, one who has an exquisite touch with character and a relentless instinct for suspense. AMC’s record speaks for itself: Who wouldn’t want to be in business with the Mad Men who Broke Bad and made The Dead Walk? And Tornante’s dedication to bringing singular visions to TV has freed everyone involved to do their best and truest work. I can’t wait to see Vic McQueen turn the throttle and go after Charlie Manx in 2019. Let’s ride.”
The eight episode mini series Gentleman Jack is set in 1832 West Yorkshire, when women were to be seen and not heard, and lesbianism was merely whispered about. Anne Lister’s endeavour to turn society on its head came about when she inherited her family home; in an attempt to breathe new life into the household, she undertook business and was in search of a wife.
The cast supporting Suranne Jones as Lister include Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as Lister’s prospective wife, Ann Walker; Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) as Lister’s sister, Marian; Timothy West (Bleak House) as their father Jeremy Lister, and playing their Aunt Anne will be Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Diary).
The series premieres on the 22nd of April 2019. Check out the trailer below!
The 1998 novel is narrated by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, “a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959.” Along with Anya Epstein, Barbara Kingsolver will be adapting her own novel for the screen- a boon for literary purists who are wary of screen adaptations which lose their essence in translation.
The novel was a Pulitzer prize finalist, and has been called ‘breathtaking’, full of ‘humour and love’, with Kingsolver named as one of the finest writers of her generation.
Mike Barker, director of Outlander and The Handmaid’s Tale has been hired for the project, to tell the story of a young boy named Jack Sawyer and his quest through a monstrous dimension to find the mystical title object that might cure his dying mother, and even save two worlds in the process.
The heartbreaking All the Light We Cannot See is set in World War II and tells the parallel stories of a French girl, who is blind, and a German boy. Marie-Laure and her father escape Paris to a seaside town when the Nazis arrive, carrying with them a precious jewel. Meanwhile German ophan, Werner is a self taught radio expert who is enlisted by the Nazis to use this ability against the French Resistance. As they both try and survive the devastation of the war, their lives collide in spectacular fashion.
Without posting spoilers, Season 1 came to a pretty finite end, but season 2 is taking the story in a new direction with a whole new cast and will be called The Haunting of Bly Manor. For the extra bookish among you, bonus points if you knew that was a location from the Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw, and it seems that book will be the inspiration for the new season.
