Terry Deary’s Horrible Histories to be Adapted for Film

It’s 25 years since the release of the first Horrible Histories book, a favourite of my own daughter, this Terry Deary series has stood the test of time, teaching history in a way that is fun and exciting for children. This week we hear the news that the first in the series is to be adapted for film, set in Roman Britain, and it could lead to the adaptation of the rest of the series too.

Fans of the series will know that there has already been a small screen adaptation on the BBC several years ago. The series adapted well and was popular with viewers. Horrible Histories: The Movie is being produced in the UK, which is unsurprising for the UK-centric series, and will be made by Altitude Film Entertainment, with Citrus Films, who were actually behind the small screen adaptation too.

The screenplay is written by Jessica Swale and will be based on the much loved book. Set in Roman Britain, the movie is likely to be big budget and bring these ‘Horrible’ historical events to a new generation of children in a brand new way.

There’s no release date yet for the movie but you can expect a series of new merchandise to go with it, new editions of the books, and maybe even a film series if the first movie is well received.
