Derailing My Train of Thought by Thomas Wightman

Whatever you think of book art, there’s no denying the talent and thought that has gone into this book sculpture I stumbled upon yesterday. I’ve seen lots of book art in the years running FRA but never quite something as immensely detailed as ‘Derailing My Train of Thought’, a bookish art project by Thomas Wightman.

The art has a serious edge too, the artist says:

“The final book sculpture of my major project series. Like the previous two sculptures it uses a visual metaphor to convey the emotions of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and embodies my research by visualising an expression used by a sufferer of OCD. The expression was ‘derailing my train of thought’, because the person felt that the rituals they had to perform were disrupting their day. Where the compulsions and worry would side track them from doing everyday activities.”

Here’s a selection of the images of the project, expect to get your mind blown with the detail!

The artist even displayed a series of pictures showing how the project had come to fruition, here’s one of those and it shows just how detailed and fiddly the project was.

The entire thing must have taken incredible patience, it’s mind-blowingly talented and one of the most detailed book sculptures we’ve ever seen. You can see more images and find more information about the piece at the artist’s website.
