Susan Eloise Hinton is better known to us as the author of The Outsiders S.E Hinton; advised to use her initials rather than her full name when publishing her first novel, Susan was informed that by removing her femininity from her authorship she would be less likely to be overlooked.
No matter how dreadful that may sound in modern times, a certain J.K Rowling was also advised to drop her full names in order to be taken seriously when publishing that first Harry Potter novel showing that women authors are still not taken as seriously as their male counterparts.
Fortunately for us readers, from those first uncertain forays into writing and becoming published, Susan has gone on to write 5 YA books, 2 Children’s novels and 2 Adult fiction novels as well as her autobiography. So to honour her achievements despite odds stacked against her for no other reason than she was born a woman, here are 10 Out of this World Quotes from S.E Hinton.
