Novelist, John Robert Fowles was born on 31st March 1926 in Leigh on Sea, Essex.
After studying French for his degree at Oxford, Fowles taught English, first at The University of Poitiers in France and then on the Greek island of Spetsai. It was his time on this island that gave him the inspiration for his first novel “The Magus”.
Fowles won the Silver Pen Award and the WH Smith literary award for his best know work “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” (US – UK). This work was later adapted for film in 1981 by playwright Harold Pinter, starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. The novel is set in Lyme Regis in Dorset, where Fowles was evacuated for three years during The Second World War and where he lived until his death on 5th November 2005 at the age of 79.
