Authors and Their Pets

By January 26, 2017Authors

Books and pets go together like tea and cake, there’s nothing quite like curling up in a comfy chair with a dog at your feet and a book in your hands, or perhaps spending the evening snuggled up in bed with a cat lying beside you and those last few chapters that just have to be read.

Pets are also a much loved part of many authors lives too and we have collected together some of our favourites here for you to coo over.

Mark Twain and Bambino

Bought for his daughter Clara during her extended illness Twain became increasingly fond of this gorgeous black cat offering a substantial reward for the animal when it went missing resulting in all manner of felines being brought to his door simply so the ‘finder’ could get a glimpse of the author.

Edith Wharton and her dogs

Edith was a renowned dog lover and it is a well known fact that childless and trapped in a loveless marriage Edith’s chihuahuas were both her companions and her children.

John Steinbeck and Charley

John Steinbeck loved his dog so much he even wrote about traveling with Charley his beloved pet and is quoted as saying “I’ve seen a look in dogs’ eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts.”.

William S. Burroughs and Ginger

Author William S. Burroughs made his love for all things feline known in his book The Cat Inside, although he was not one to over romanticise his pets  saying “Like all pure creatures, cats are practical.”.

Doris Lessing and her cats

A lifelong lover of felines Lessing wrote a memoir of all the cats she had known which is filled with beautiful quotes such as “In grey cat’s eyes lay the green shade of a jade butterfly’s wing, as if an artist had said: What could be as graceful, as delicate as a cat?”.

Stephen King and Molly

King’s humorous Tweets about his gorgeous corgi Molly belie a real fondness for the gorgeous pooch who has shared his home and his social media accounts for the last two years.

Dorothy Parker and her dog Misty

Misty was a multi talented pooch according to her owner Dorothy; “Why, that dog is practically a Phi Beta Kappa. She can sit up and beg, and she can give her paw — I don’t say she will but she can.”

Charles Dickens and his Raven

The inspiration for Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven Charles Dickens’ pet bird was called Grip and apparently had an impressive vocabulary, unfortunately he also had a penchant for eating paint which ultimately lead to his demise.

Dean Koontz and Trixie

Dean’s dog Trixie a gorgeous Golden Retriever was a huge part of Dean’s life and is credited as the author of a few of his boos. She made such an impression that most of his books now feature a Golden Retriever in some way.

Donna Tartt and Pongo

Donna’s pug Pongo apparently has a strict criteria for friendship.. You have to be Donna Tartt “My dog has a number of acquaintances of his own species — as do I — but it is abundantly clear to both of us that there is little company in all the world which we enjoy so much as each other’s.”.

Books and pets really are the perfect companions whether reading them or creating them don’t you agree.
