NO MAJOR SPOILERS
All the books of Amanda Prowse that I have read have tugged at my heart and been five star reads and this one is no different!
It’s just the beautiful way she has of expressing the situations her characters find themselves in that I find very real and something that I can relate to always.
Thomasina as a character is someone you want to hug and protect because she is so vulnerable. But that’s exactly what you shouldn’t do and what she doesn’t want or need!
Born with physical impairments that have kept her feeling ‘not normal’ she knows that her parents love her dearly and their over protectiveness is their way of showing it. But she is fed up. Of the same routine at the farm that has been in her family for generations, the same life, the same cakes baked in cake tins passed down by her ancestors and most of all, her loneliness.
But wanting to break the shackles is not enough to actually do it, with her parents needing her more than ever after her brother migrates in search of a more fulfilling life.
Plodding along, she tries to find snatches of peace and happiness until she meets a kindred soul, Grayson Potts, who is very different from her and yet so similar in the way his life is stuck in a place not of his choice. His dominating mother and her need to control him have meant he has done very little he wants to with his life.
Bonding over their issues and finding that they completely understand each other… He finds her beautiful and she says he can make her happy in a way no one else can… they lose themselves in their own small cocoon… Until the reality that they cannot ignore comes crashing in with him being a Londoner and she a farm girl who cannot imagine a life in the city though she wishes to travel and see new places.
The transformation in both their lives is the most endearing part of the story with nothing being sugarcoated and no sudden miracles.
A very sweet story and a heartwarming read.
