“This book makes you question everything, including the flaws of forensics. Could we all be framed for a murder we didn’t commit?”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

This thriller is suspenseful from the first page, filled with intriguing characters and riveting twists. The book is set in Amsterdam and gives a glimpse of everyday life. The main character is a strong and relatable woman, in her early thirties. She’s struggling after her husband has suddenly died and she’s left behind to take care of her two-year old. Her life begins to fall apart after she finds out a dirty secret, leaving her with unanswered questions. Her determination to carry on though and to go above and beyond, for the sake of finding answers and justice for her husband’s death is inspiring. It’s a thriller at heart, with many twists and turns, but there’s an element of romance as well, and a deeper message on the transient nature of life. Perhaps the romance started a bit abruptly, but hey, it was entertaining as well.

As soon as I started reading, I just wanted to continue and I finished the book in two days. It’s fast and has an easy flow to it, it’s just entertaining and has a really unique combination of being a thriller, with some aspects of a novel. The ending of the book really intrigued and kind of creeped me out, in equal measures.

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

This author was unknown to me but this book really nails it on the head. I found this thriller gripping from the very first page and I couldn’t stop reading any more after I started (until 3 in the morning). The life of the young mum, Jennifer has suddenly gone from perfect to being in dire straits as she is faced with the tragic and unexpected death of her lawyer husband. She all of a sudden stumbles upon a piece of information that turns her life further upside down, leading to a series of events that keeps you reading. I could really feel for the young mum, all her emotions were written in a very convincing way, it was almost as if you’re her.

The book sometimes feels a bit like a suspenseful novel, and then it really feels like a thriller again, with its gripping twists and turns. The chapters are relatively short and the dialogues feel natural and are fast. Towards the end you have your suspicions about how the husband was killed, but the ending actually really surprised me ( in a good way).
