“Not a novel but a booty brought back from nightmare, a coldly implacable look at the dark side of our nature.”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

I watched the Naked Lunch movie many, many years ago, a long time before I became interested in controversial books and I can honestly say it’s one of the weirdest things I have ever seen! I spent half of the movie truly confused as to what was going on in what is a truly trippy, disgusting movie.

For years I wondered just how the book had been written for this monstrosity to be the movie form and eventually picked it up for Banned Books Week.

I can honestly say it’s one of the weirdest things I have ever read and I spent half the book truly confused as to what was going on in what is a truly trippy, disgusting book.

Now I’m staunchly against book banning of any form, but Naked Lunch has few redeeming features and needs reading for what it is. It’s truly horrible in parts, confusing from start to finish and truly one of the most trying books I have ever read.

I did struggle through until the end, although even today I’m not sure if I’m glad I persevered or not. If you want a really shocking read, designed to stretch the realms of your thinking and understanding this might be for you. It’s one long drug addled, debaucherous orgy, and it’s hard to read for the content as for the writing.

Of course this is only my opinion and as it’s a highly respected and loved cult novel, who am I to argue with the masses?
