“A labyrinthine bookshop in the heart of beautiful Brecon!”
Andrew Morton Books - Brecon, Powys
Brecon is such a lovely town full of narrow little streets and interesting buildings and it also has a couple of cracking bookshops. While visiting one weekend, I came across Andrew Morton Books in Lion Yard. Housed in a large but quaint building on the corner, it looks pretty unassuming, until you step inside!
Bookcases upon bookcases wind for what seems like miles to the back of the shop, like a never ending labyrinthine cave full of dreams. I was in absolute heaven! The shop stocks second hand books, fiction and non-fiction with more than I would like to estimate. There are books on shelves, books stacked on floors, books stacked at every corner, and then some!
If you’re like me then you’d be happy to spend an hour just stroking the shelves, reading titles until you eventually found what you want, but query the owner and he appears to know where every book is in the entire shop. There are shelves of classics, horror, favourite authors, non-fiction, history, local history, an entire shelf of Penguin first editions, and more.
Since I’ve returned from Brecon, I’ve read that just a stone’s throw away is another bookshop, also Morton’s, but that specialises in non-fiction. I didn’t see it myself, as I only entered the Lion Yard shop, but you’d need a whole day to look around both!
