When it opened in 1985 Basically Books was basically just that, books. Over the years however it has evolved into something much more with a wide selection of books, maps, music, and gifts for any occasion Basically Books has become a gathering place for local authors.

Basically Books We specialises in books about Hawaii both current and classic, including history, mythology, fiction, travel guides, natural history, marine science, children’s books, language, ‘Olelo Downtown Hilo bookstore Basically Book’s Hawaiian History, literature, biography and memoir section Hawaii, and much more. Also specialising in rare and out of print Hawaiiana books.

You will also find a huge selection of music and gifts and toys for the little ones which ensures a great day out for the entire family.

Founded in downtown Hilo in 1985, Basically Books moved in the summer of 2017 to a new location near Banyan Drive and Ken’s House of Pancakes. With plenty of free parking and the same knowledgeable service, this is a browser’s paradise for books, maps, music and gifts focusing on Hawaii. A large Children’s section features books, toys and games. Colorful and whimsical umbrellas, locally made jewelry, body products and food items make great souvenirs.
