“Prices are good and most books seemed to be in good to great condition.”

The Book Corner - Beaverton, Oregon

Just down the street from the Beaverton library, is this cute little used bookstore, The Book Corner. The bookstore sells used books, movies and music and all proceeds go towards benefitting the local public library (the last photograph). They stock a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction paperback and hardback books – most of which are priced at 75 cents, or $1.50. They also sell vintage classics, art books and newer releases, although these are sold at a slightly higher price. All of these books have been generously donated by the public for a very good cause.

The quant bookstore’s mission is fantastic. They support and strengthen, as well as work alongside the library to expand services into the community, encouraging the community to foster an appreciation of library services. They also promote the development of library programs, and twice a year they help to fulfill another wish from the Beaverton City Library’s “Wish List” – in the past this list has included an e-reader, Blu-ray movies, computers and printers, furniture for the children’s reading area, staff training and a wide variety of books. It is brilliant that this bookstore and its members see how valuable having a public library with good service is to the local community. It is even better that they are achieving it through the medium of books!

The store is run completely by volunteers, albeit one part-time employed manager. If this cause interests you, there is more that you can do besides purchasing a book. You can become a member of The New Friends of the Beaverton City Library. The members are crucial to the development of the organisation, since the member dues are an important source of revenue. The opportunity to become a member is open to anybody! If this isn’t for you, then you could volunteer in the bookshop (which is always looking for new volunteers) – this is not only a great way to support the cause, but also an excellent way to make new friends in your local area who also have an interest in books! Finally, you could donate your gently used books.

While you may not find the newest releases at The Book Corner, you can still pick up a cheap book which helps out a brilliant cause!
