Mike Pence’s Daughter Supports John Oliver’s Parody of Her Children’s Book

Earlier this week, we reported the news that English comedian John Oliver, presenter of the satirical news show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, had published his own children’s book that parodied a book for youngsters written by the Pence family. The Pence’s book was written by Mike’s daughter Charlotte and features watercolour illustrations by his wife (and second lady) Karen Pence. The story follows the Pence’s bunny Marlon Bundo as he follows a day in the life of the Vice President. Oliver’s book is also about the Pence’s rabbit but follows his same-sex wedding.

Oliver’s book was designed to highlight the fact that Mike Pence has been in opposition to many bills regarding same-sex issues and, in 2015, he signed the controversial religious freedom bill. Both books have proven to be a hit among readers and, at the time of writing, Oliver’s book is at the top of the Amazon bestsellers list whilst the Pence’s in in fifth. The proceeds of both books are going to charities, with the Pence’s supporting A21, a non-profit focused on combating human trafficking, and an art therapy program at Riley Hospital for Children whilst Oliver’s is supporting The Trevor Project and AIDS United.

One might expect the Pence’s to be somewhat peeved over Oliver’s book, but it seems that’s not the case. According to CNN, author Charlotte Pence has stated she’s “all for” Oliver’s book and is just happy to see money going to good causes. “I think imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, in a way,” Pence said in an interview. “But in all seriousness, his book is contributing to charities that I think we can all get behind. We have two books that are giving to charities that are both about bunnies, so I’m all for it, really,” she added.

Charlotte has even purchased Oliver’s book and posted on Twitter that she’s “Happy to support charities and important causes.” Regardless of which book you’d most like to read to your little ones, it’s great to see money being raised for such worthy charities.
