Gruffalo Coin Will Celebrate 20 Years of Julia Donaldson’s Loveable Monster

By February 18, 2019Inspired by Literature, News

It’s now twenty years since parents started reading The Gruffalo to their children and Julia Donaldson’s loveable monster has certainly stood the test of time. Since the release of the children’s book there has been a stageshow, follow on books and even various themed woodland events in the UK and now to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the book’s launch, there’s to be a Gruffalo 50p piece launched next week.

The Royal Mint is keeping fairly tight lipped about the coin, and so we don’t know yet what it will look like but we assume it’s likely to feature the monster, and possibly the mouse who bravely stands up to him.

The books were illustrated by Alex Scheffler so if the coin features the creature, it’s his illustrations that are likely to end up on the coins.

In recent years we’ve seen a collection of Beatrix Potter coins, and this year is to bring Shakespeare coins, Samuel Pepys coins and even Sherlock Holmes coins. This 50p will join them to be some of the most collectable coins of the year.

Those in the UK should look out for the coins in their change, but for those overseas who would like to collect the coins, they are available to purchase from the Royal Mint website.
