Johnny Cash’s Love Letter to His Wife Makes Us Wish He’d Written a Romance Novel

By November 11, 2016Inspired by Literature

We all know that Johnny Cash is one of the greatest musicians America has ever produced. The Man in Black is up there with the likes of Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Madonna, and Jimi Hendrix. Given some of his lyrics, it should come as no surprise that Cash was a talented writer, but this love letter a wrote to his wife June Carter Cash has made us weak at the knees. It may still be a few months until Valentine’s Day, but prepare for romance.

As the Huffington Post reports, Cash penned the following note in 1994 for his wife’s 65th birthday.

The note reads:

“Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

Happy Birthday Princess.
– John”

You can also check out this card Johnny made June for Valentine’s Day in 1987.

“June,

Valentines [sic] is fine.
But you being mine
is more fine.

Thine,
John”

Johnny and June married in 1968. They were married for over thirty years until June passed away in 2003 due to complications from heart surgery. Johnny Cash passed away just four months later. It would be fair to say that Cash and Carter’s relationship wasn’t without its highs and lows, as depicted in the excellent biopic Walk the Line, but in today’s world of celebrity marriages that last five minutes, it’s nice to see such a famous pair who were clearly so devoted to one another. Following his death, Johnny was buried next to June.
