Take a Stroll Through the Abandoned Wizard of Oz Theme Park

In 1970s North Carolina, USA, two bright sparks, brothers Grover and Harry Robbins, dreamed up the ultimate Wizard of Oz theme park. Sadly, just prior to the park’s opening, Grover passed away, and he never got to see its initial success. The park was popular at first, however after a decade of waning visitor numbers the project had to be abandoned.

Back in the 1970s Land of Oz was quite stunning.

Ohio based photographer Johnny Joo recently took a walk through the abandoned theme park one foggy Autumnal day and captured it in its eerie glory… Come take a gander at the images he captured.

In the 1990s Emerald Mountain Realty took over the property and in 1994 original theme park cast members were invited back for a reunion. They then came up with the idea to begin Autumn at Oz, a yearly re-opening of Oz inviting the general public to buy tickets and see the wonders of Oz. The monies collected from tickets sales goes straight into a fund to restore the park to its former glory!

Perhaps one day we Reading Addicts will get a chance to visit!
