Futuristic Library in China May Be One of the Greatest in the World

By November 2, 2017Libraries

The Tianjin Binhai Library in China may be one of the most impressive libraries in the world. Whilst it may not have the rustic, cozy feeling of a classic library, it more than makes up for that by looking like something out of a sci-fi film.

As Shanghiist reports, The library was designed by a Dutch firm named MVRDV and was recently opened in the city’s Binhai Cultural Center and is a must visit for any bookworms planning to travel to China. The five-story library fills over 33,700 square meters and is home to over 1.2 million books.

Designed to look like a majestic building from the future, the library even features an enormous eye which, as MVRDV co-founder Winy Maas said: “The Eye is the centre of the library. It ‘hollows out’ the building and creates, out of bookshelves, an environment to sit, to read, to hang out, to climb and to access, to create an organic social space. In its heart is the auditorium which mirrors the environment, giving a 360-degree panorama of the space inside; a truly reflective and pensive environment.”
