Overdue book returned to library after 52 years!

By May 28, 2019Libraries, News

An overdue book was returned to a Suffolk library after being borrowed for 52 years.

The overdue book was returned to Lowestoft library in Suffolk along with a cheque for £100, and a note from the reader saying how embarrassed they felt. The book, The Metaphysical Poets by Jim Hunter, was due back on September 24th 1967 but is still in a good condition, according to the librarian who received the package.

Library manager Jo Wilde said she was “amazed” that the book was returned as “most people wouldn’t have even bothered.” She said the copy has been returned to the library’s shelves and that “people might come and take it out for the novelty factor.’

The late returner had taken the book out while staying in town with their parents and only came across it recently while moving house.

The original fine in 1967 for an overdue book was three old pennies a week. The title was about 2,694 weeks overdue and technically the fine should have been £33.68 but the library, a registered charity, will keep the full £100.
