2015 Etisalat Prize for Literature Shortlist Announced

With so many visitors from around the world, we’ve been trying to cover the literary awards that aren’t necessarily of the mainstream and hopefully that means we have something for everyone. Not only do we have many fans from around the world, but many of our fans like to read literature from around the world and right now it’s African literature in the spotlight as the Elisalat Prize for Literature Shortlist is announced.

The pan-African prize is open solely to debut fiction writers from African countries and is in its third year, quickly becoming acknowledged as the most prestigious literary prize for African Fiction.

Just three books have been selected for the shortlist by the three-member judging panel and they are as follows:

Tram 83 – Fiston Mwanza Mujila

Tram 83 is published by Vellum. Fiston Mwanza Mujila is from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Set around the mineral rush, Tram 83 plunges the reader into the atmosphere of cynical exploitation and is funny and colourfully exotic, studying human relationships in a world that has become a global village.

The Story of Anna P, as told by herself – Penny Busetto

The Story of Anna P is published by Jacana Media. Penny Busetto is from South Africa.

The Story of Anna P reflects on the past, previous and present treatment of women as Anna P, who lives on an Italian island has no idea of how she got there. With no memories, the novel looks at identity, morals and sense of self.

All of the shortlisted authors will be rewarded with a sponsored multi-city book tour and will have 1,000 copies of their book purchased by Etisalat for distribution to schools, libraries and book clubs in Africa.

The winner of the 2015 Etisalat Prize for Literature will receive £15,000 and engraved Montblanc Meisterstuck pen and a sponsored fellowship at the University of East Anglia. The winning author will be announced in March.
