Pulitzer Prize for Literature Winners 2018

The Pulitzer Prize is the biggest US prize for the arts, awarding prizes for literature, drama, music and journalism. It’s the literature prizes we are of course interested in and today we announce the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and the rest of the literature prizes.

The main literature prize, the Pulitzer Prize for fiction goes to Less by Andrew Sean Greer this year. A funny and touching tale, Less follows the life of mid-list novelist who needs to grow up. Here’s that, and the other Pulitzer winners for 2018.

Neil Gaiman Wins Science Fiction Poetry Prize

Neil Gaiman’s poem The Mushroom Hunters has won first prize in the Long Poem category at The 2018 Rhysling Awards.

The Science Fiction Poetry Association’s award was started in 1978 in recognition of achievements in the field of speculative poetry. The award was named after the blind singer and storyteller “Noisy” Rhysling, the protagonist of Robert A. Heinlein’s “The Green Hills of Earth“.

Neil Gaiman’s poem The Mushroom Hunters beat a whole array of other-worldly poems to gain the prestigious first prize for a long poem. The poem has been heralded as the “first feminist poem about the dawn of science“.

The Winner of the 2018 Orwell Prize is Announced

The Orwell Prize is British literary award given out yearly for political writing of outstanding quality. Each year three prizes are awarded, one for a book, one for journalism, and a recently added category for ‘exposing Britain’s evils’. As always it’s the book prize we’re interested here at For Reading Addicts and the 2018 winner has been announced.

The 2018 Orwell Prize for political literature goes to Scottish rapper Darren McGarvey who performs under the name Loki, who has won the prize for Poverty Safari, a searing examination of the British underclass.

J. K. Rowling and Stan Lee inducted into Sci-Fi and Fantasy Hall of Fame

J. K. Rowling has been named as one of the writers to be inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame along with Marvel grandaddy Stan Lee.

The hall of fame for sci-fi and fantasy has been going since 1996 and Lee will be the first comic book writer to be included. Both he and Rowling have made a significant impact on the world of pop culture this past decade, with a stream of books and movies and an ever-expanding universe for both Marvel and the Potter fandom.

Rape Charges Filed after Nobel Academy Scandal

In a shock decision there was no Nobel Prizes this year after the Academy fought off a scandal centred round Jean-Claude Arnault. Arnault’s wife Katarina Frostenson is a well known poet and sits on the Academy. Sara Danius, the first woman to lead the Academy led the protest but those who wanted to play down the scandal ousted her from her post.

The scandal continued with many members resigning in protest, leaving the Academy in crisis due to its own rules. It looked as though the entire Nobel Prize Academy might have been disbanded forever but it was ultimately saved, although 2018 will be the first year in 69 years that the awards have not been given.
