Banned Books: The New Jim Crow

By January 9, 2018Literature, Political

The New Jim Crow is an award-winning book by Michelle Alexander and was published in 2010. The critically acclaimed book offers an insight into prevalent discrimination against African Americans in the criminal justice system.

By obtaining public records about banned books, The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) discovered that the book had been banned from some prisons in New Jersey. The ACLU have called for the ban to be lifted, citing that it violates the rights of inmates under the first amendment to the US constitution.

A letter was sent to New Jersey’s corrections commissioner, Gary Lanigan, containing worries many have with the implications of the ban. The ACLU said the ban was particularly troubling because the New Jersey has the widest disparity between white and black incarceration rates in the USA.

According to The Guardian, Tess Borden, staff attorney of the ACLU remarked within the letter:

“For the state burdened with this systemic injustice to prohibit prisoners from reading a book about race and mass incarceration is grossly ironic, misguided, and harmful,”

Via email, the author of the book, Michelle Alexander, said the ban was in keeping with a widespread denial of civil and human rights to inmates in American prisons.

The author of the book also noted:

“Those who run our prisons and jails seem determined to keep those who are locked up and locked out as ignorant as possible about the racial, social, and political forces that have turned this country into the most punitive nation on earth. There’s no reasonable explanation for this save one: prison officials must fear what would happen if people fully understood how biased and corrupt our so-called justice system actually is.”

It is unclear as to why the book has been banned as it does not promote drug abuse, violence, nor does it contain any sexually explicit passages. Under New Jersey regs, inmates are banned from receiving or reading any piece that threatens prison safety, incites violence, or shows any activities like lock-picking or bomb-making. Interestingly on the banned list are magazines covering hip-hop and black culture such as The Source and XXL.

Mother Jones reports that Trump’s co-author and the U.S.’ leading book sales tracking company has revealed that Fire and Fury is set to reach over 1.75 million copies sold within the short time it has been out, meanwhile The Art of the Deal, which turned 30 last year, has sold approximately 1.67 million copies.

Since Trump took office just over a year ago, he has been hotly debated by all sides of the political spectrum. Fire and Fury claims to give a behind-the-scenes look at the Trump administration. Milo Yiannopoulos’ Editor Didn’t Hold Back

By | News, Political | No Comments
In 2017, the controversial figure Milo Yiannopoulos was working towards publishing his memoirs. Publishing giants Simon & Schuster spent a while debating over whether they even wanted to be seen as supporting Yiannopoulos and his message. The provocative face of the far-right had written some unashamedly hateful opinions that eventually became too much for Simon & Schuster to protect under the umbrella of ‘free speech’, and the memoirs were cancelled. Yiannopoulos eventually had to self-publish.

January 2018 has seen further evidence of the process the publishing team went through before they decided the memoirs were not your average right-wing non-fiction. Critique and comments made by Yiannopoulos’s editor have been made public thanks to the documents being put forward in the earlier court case. Sarah Mei on Twitter had realised this and read through the manuscript’s comments with glee before posting them online.

Segregated Travel Guides Published in the Last Century for African-American Travellers are Being Republished

By | New Releases, News, Political | No Comments
The Negro Motorist Green Books were a series of travel guides published by postal worker Victor Hugo Green from the 1930’s to the 1960’s, when civil rights laws brought about an end to legal segregation. The books informed travellers as to where they could find places that would allow black people to sleep, eat, and shop. The books went out of publication after the 60s and were all but forgotten about, until they were recently rediscovered and reprinted for modern readers.

The first Green Book was published in 1936 and served to help black travelers in the United States find services that would be open to them and also advised on the accepted custom for black people in different areas. The book’s tagline, “Carry your Green Book with you … you may need it,” serves as both good advice and as a warning of the intolerance of many white people. Read More
