The Doubtful Guest by Edward Gorey

By February 22, 2017February 21st, 2021Authors, Literature

Born on February 22, 1925 Edward Gorey is best known for his fabulous alternative A-Z novel  the Gashlycrumb Tinies which catalogues the horrible deaths of his alphabetically listed children rather than presenting us with boring apples, balls and cats.

Poetic and beautifully illustrated his novels may have been considered children’s books but they were definitely equally as entertaining for the adults who were reading them. With pen-and-ink drawings that often depicted vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings Gorey has an almost cult following and his book The Doubtful Guest shows us why he is loved by so many.
