Emma Watson is most known to us as the book loving Hermione Granger and despite falling into many other movie roles, it’s unlikely she’ll ever really shake off that bookish persona. Recently, the actress has been working with UN Women and as such has found herself reading many books about equality and feminism and this has inspired her to launch a feminist book club.
It seems the idea came about in a flash in the pan kind of way with Emma herself throwing out the story on Twitter on January 6th, but as we all know the Internet doesn’t mess around and now it’s up and running with the name ‘Our Shared Shelf’ decided on.
The book club will be run via Goodreads here and you can join in all the discussion and chatter of the chosen book on the last week of each month. I have to confess to possibly being the only person in the world who really doesn’t like Goodreads so I won’t be joining in the discussions myself, but I do intend on reading along with some of the reads.
If you’re hoping to join and have a chat with Emma herself, you may be disappointed, it seems that she intends on instigating the event each month with quotes and questions and leaving readers to discuss the book together. Here’s what she says about the book club:
“I will post some questions/quotes to get things started,” writes Emma. “But I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation. Everyone is welcome. I would be honoured!”
The first book is announced as My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem but there’ll be a brand new book, and a brand new discussion each month. We think the entire thing is a wonderful idea, and we can’t think of anyone better to run it than Hermione Granger!
