Vintage, an imprint of Penguin Random House and the publisher of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale has made another exciting announcement. A new audiobook edition of the Handmaid’s Tale, from Penguin Random House Audio, has been released and it is narrated by none other than Elisabeth Moss.
Fans of the Channel 4 TV adaptation of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale will know Elisabeth Moss as the actress who plays the lead role, Offred (June). Elisabeth Moss’ narration of The Handmaid’s Tale audiobook was recorded during breaks in the filming for series 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale TV adaptation and the actress even did some of the recordings in full costume, ready to head back to the set when needed. Other co-stars from the TV series also join Elisabeth Moss on the recordings, giving voices to characters who appear in the book’s Historical Notes. Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia), has narrated the introduction of the Historical Notes, while Amy Landecker and Bradley Whitford (Commander Joseph Lawrence) tell of the demise of Gilead and the ambiguous ending to Offred’s story. With the publication of The Testaments (Chatto & Windus) later this year, however, we are soon going to find out what happened to Gilead and Offred after The Handmaid’s Tale ended.
About this exciting new recording, Margaret Atwood said, “I am delighted that Elisabeth Moss has agreed to narrate this new audio edition of The Handmaid’s Tale. Her reading is powerful, haunting, compelling, and authentic. She is a natural actor who values the truth of a role above her own star quality. I have been so lucky to have had her interpreting Offred.”
