It has been announced that US politician Hillary Clinton, who famously ran against Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, is co-writing a book with her daughter Chelsea Clinton. Called The Book of Gutsy Women, the title will include over 100 women throughout history who have inspired the two women.
As The Guardian reports, the book will profile “leaders with the courage to stand up to the status quo, ask hard questions, and get the job done.” Women found in the boo include the likes of historian Mary Beard, climate change activist Greta Thunberg, 17th-century nun and poet Juana Inés de la Cruz, civil war surgeon Mary Edwards Walker, Shirley Chisholm, who ran for US president in 1972, television presenter Ellen DeGeneres and Manal al-Sharif, who filmed herself driving a car in 2011 in objection of Saudi Arabian laws.
The book follows the publication of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 memoir, What Happened, which covered her bid for presidency in the 2016 US election. “If history shows one thing, it’s that the world needs gutsy women,” said the Clintons. “So in the moments when the long haul seems awfully long, we hope you will draw strength from these stories. We do.”
“Each of these women has fought and won the kinds of victories that pave the way for progress for all of us,” said Clinton. “This book is a continuation of a conversation Chelsea and I have been having since she was a little girl, and we are excited to welcome others into that conversation.”
Over 100 women throughout history will have their stories told, and the Clintons aim for this book to celebrate “the histories that all too often get overlooked or are left unwritten.”
Like her mother, Chelsea Clinton is no stranger to authoring books. In 2017 she published She Persisted, a picture book about 13 notable American women and, in 2018, she followed that up with a second book called She Persisted Around the World, a book that tells the story of 13 notable women from across the globe. The Book of Gusty Women is set to be released later this year on October 1 and will be published by Simon & Schuster.
