5 books to help kids understand mask-wearing during the pandemic

By September 11, 2020Children's Literature, News

As the world continues to battle against the COVID19 pandemic, kids are being sent back to school uncertain and perhaps anxious about what this ‘new normal’ is going to be like.

Some kids are taking it in their stride, while others may need some encouragement to go along with the latest guidelines. If their schools or clubs advise mask-wearing and distancing the smaller kids may need some help understanding what this will entail.

We have a short list of recommended books for children to help discuss and normalise the use of masks during this difficult time.

“Having a pet dragon is really fun and you can teach him to do lots of cool things… But what if your dragon doesn’t know how to properly wear a mask? What if he’s struggling with wearing a mask because he doesn’t understand how important it is to wear a mask in public because of a virus outbreak? How do you teach him about germs, viruses and the pandemic? How do you show him what needed to be done to keep himself and everyone safe? How do you teach your dragon to wear a mask to help prevent the spread of germs and viruses during the pandemic?

Get this book now and learn with Diggory Doo the dragon why wearing masks are important during this time!”

“Primrose and the Icky, No Good and Altogether Rotten Face Mask! seeks to help children not only understand the importance of masks and how to reduce the spread of Covid-19, but also encourage them to reshape their perceptions and help them to see the “fun” side of helping their communities bend the curve.
From the minds of Jules Cline and Krista Perdue (bestselling children’s author of the beloved story, “Wonderful Funderful You!”) comes a new age-appropriate book that shows children how to find the positive in an act that can also save lives.

Heartprint Club Books is proud to donate a portion of the proceeds to Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charities.”

“Lucy’s world turned upside down. She’s bored. She can’t be together with her friends. But when she finds out her mom is making her a new mask her boredom turns into excitement. Lucy loves masks! She dives into her toy box full of costumes and opens a world of imagination and make-believe adventure, far beyond the walls of her room. Of course, she doesn’t realise that the mask her mom is making is not a costume at all but one that will keep her safe and make her a real-life superhero.

For parents, grandparents and teachers searching for stories that give kids comfort and reassurance about the sudden changes around them, Lucy’s Mask is a welcome new addition to reading time. This book is not a science lesson. It’s a simple fun story that helps kids make sense of their emotions and makes this new reality more relatable and less scary. It is a wonderful tool to continue the conversation about germs, viruses, the pandemic, and what families have to do to keep themselves safe.A portion of proceeds from sales of Lucy’s Mask will be donated to frontline workers and first responders.”
