Billy Porter to play fairy godmother in new Cinderella adaptation

Billy Porter (Kinky Boots, Pose) will be playing the fairy godmother in a new musical movie adaptation of Cinderella.

The romantic musical comedy is set to be released in 2021, and will be directed by Kay Cannon. Camila Cabello will star as Cinderella alongside her are Idina Menzel as her stepmother with Maddie Baillio as Anastasia and Charlotte Spencer as Drizella, the awful stepsisters. Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver are playing the king and queen, and Nicholas Galitzine will be the prince, alongside a host of stars playing mice/footmen and others.

Billy Porter seems the perfect choice for Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother since his recent championing of gender non-conformity has shot him into the spotlight. Following Porter’s role as Pray Tell the MC in Pose, Porter wanted to do something a little more magical but keep pushing those gender binary boundaries.

“Magic has no gender,” Billy Porter told CBS News. “We are presenting this character as genderless. That’s how I’m playing it.”

A word to the stubborn binary enforcers out there- Billy Porter has no time for you or your stuffy ways.

The fresh and exciting fairy godmother character will be named “the Fab G” and Porter said he isn’t worried about those who might object to his powerful reimagined role.

“This is a classic fairy tale for a new generation,” he said. “I think that the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grownups that are slowing stuff down.”

Catch up, grown ups!
