Bookshop Project Demonstrates the Gender Gap in Fiction

By March 4, 2017January 3rd, 2019Bookshops, News, Video

In recent years it seems we’re spoiled for choice for female authors, and while it’s been a long time coming, men still dominate the fiction section. The gender gap in fiction is huge, and although it is closing, male authors are still dominating the shelves, even when it comes to writing female characters.

To demonstrate this issue, one bookshop has taken a unique approach in a performance art project. Loganberry Books in Ohio brought in the staff and shelved all general fiction works by men backwards, leaving only women’s work spine out and legible.

Here you can see the project in action, and it was no small task:

Once finished, the team filmed the finished result and as you can see, it’s a total whitewash! Nearly every section has huge white blanks as books by male authors dominate every genre of literature.

While we all know the gender gap exists, nothing gives it quite the visual as this project! Well done to Loganberry Books for all the amazing hard work they put in to achieve this. If you’re in the Shaker Heights, Ohio area pop in and see them, or visit their Facebook page here.
