Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is coming to Ireland!

By February 18, 2019Children's Literature, News

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has been a successful venture since it started in 1995, and recently hit its 100 millionth donation! Thanks to people joining in and supporting the charity, Dolly’s team have been able to reach further afield- starting with Ireland.

The programme aims to give as many children as possible a free book and help start them on their literary journey, or encourage one already flourishing. It was launched in Ireland at the South Dublin County Council Library in Tallaght on Thursday. New books will now be available for all children aged up to five living in Dublin 24, for free!

Once they are signed up each child will receive a free book of their very own, every month until they are five. The books are delivered straight to the child’s home, addressed personally to them (and any parent knows how excited a child can get when they receive their own mail!).

Coordinated by the Tallaght-based Childhood Development Initiative (CDI), with the support of An Post, the Dublin Rotary Club and Shamrock Rovers Football Club, the programme is open to all children, including age-appropriate books for siblings of different ages.

“You can never get enough books into the hands of young children,” Dolly told the press, “I know there are children in Ireland with their own dreams – the dream of becoming a doctor, an inventor, or a teacher. Who knows, maybe a writer, or singer. The seeds of these dreams can often be found in books and the seeds planted in a community can grow across the world.”
