An Exhibition of the Secret Art of Seuss

By July 9, 2016News

An Exhibition of the secret art of Seuss is to open on Monday 11th July in Vancouver Canada.

Theodor Seuss Geisel who is known the world over as Dr Seuss is remembered as much for his fabulous artistry as he is for his wonderful stories and his talent for using rhyming couplets in such a way that they have become the staple literary diet for hundreds of thousands of children everywhere. His book Oh the Places You’ll Go is now an oft given Graduation gift and was even read out as part of a rather wonderful wedding ceremony I recently attended. In fact, Seuss is everywhere and now we have the chance to see a little more of him.

During his lifetime Seuss would draw as a method of overcoming writer’s block, keeping these images just for family and to retain a sense of privacy, and the forty reproductions of the author’s private art that will be displayed at The Pendulum Gallery make up a small part of what Seuss called his Midnight Paintings which contained around 200 images. Although he requested that they not be published while he was alive, Seuss was happy for his wife to release his drawings after he had died and the examples being shown in this exhibition are there with the blessing of his estate.

Included in the Gallery will be nine images of hand coloured drawings recreated last year to honour the 25th anniversary of Geisel’s final book,Oh the Places You’ll Go! There will also be a collection of five fantastical animal head sculptures that were made in the 1930s and called Unorthodox Taxidermy, each head has a typical Seuss style name such as The Carbonic Walrus and the Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast.

The display will be open to the public until July 30th  but if you cannot make it there is a book about the collection available called The Cat Behind the Hat.
