First Bookshop Day and a New Literary Award from BAMB

By September 14, 2016Bookshops, Literary Awards, News

BAMB, or Books Are My Bag is the campaign from the Booksellers Association (BA) helping to promote literature, and independent bookstores. The Books Are My Bag Campaign is now in its fourth year, to resounding success and now the Booksellers Association has announced the first Bookshop Day, and a new BAMB literary award too!

The first Bookshop Day for the UK and Ireland will take place on Saturday 8th October, and we’ll be celebrating with some feature posts over on our social media channels. The date follows another important date in the publishing character, Thursday 6th October when all the big Autumn titles are released!

The Booksellers Association will also be continuing last year’s Civilised Saturday response to Black Friday, holding special events in bookshops across the UK, and as always you can pick up your Books are My Bag bags at participating indie bookshops across the UK. This year’s bag designs have been released, and one of them will feature Winnie the Pooh to celebrate 90 years since the author’s birth.

And if that wasn’t enough, it’s also just been announced that the BAMB Readers Choice Awards are to launch this year, asking readers to vote for favourite books across five categories.

Readers will be asked to vote on fiction, non-fiction, biography, autobiography, children’s, and a vote on a ‘breakthrough author’. The shortlist for the new award will be released on Thursday 6th October, ahead of the first Bookshop Day with the winners announced in London on 24th November.

It’s a huge deal from the Booksellers Association as they compete with the tide of online booksellers. The news has been good in recent years for Indie bookshops, and campaigns such as the Books Are My Bag Campaign have gone a long way to helping bookshops back into their rightful place on the high street.
