Hotel Commonwealth offers writers a two-week residency

By August 2, 2019 Literary Places, News

Boston’s Hotel Commonwealth is offering an aspiring author a free two-week stay at the luxury hotel in Kenmore Square.

The hotel is offering a chance to win a two-week stay in a suite inspired by the Boston author Ben Mezrich, whose past bestsellers include Bringing Down the House and Accidental Billionaires. Mezrich will be one of several judges in charge of picking a winner, along with other judges from the hotel, and the Boston Book Festival.

Applicants have been asked to send in the first 500 words of a book, as well as a 100 word synopsis. According to the contest’s rules, only unpublished authors over age 21 will be considered. After writing at the retreat for two weeks, the author will then get the chance to have their manuscript read by local authors.

Submissions will be accepted between now and October 1, with the winner getting notified by the end of November.

If you don’t manage to get your submission in on time there is always a chance to stay at the hotel, in one of their rooms dedicated to Mezrich.

The Mezrich-themed suite comes stocked with a typewriter, a record player, and reams of paper, along with some merchandise from his blockbusters, and some of the author’s favourite movies, books, and snacks, including Jack Daniels, cola, Fritos, Oreos, and every writer’s friend– coffee!

It starts at $699 a night.

What a bargain!
