J.R.R. Tolkien’s Family Home on the Market for £4.5 Million

By October 18, 2019News

J.R.R. Tolkien is considered to be the father of modern fantasy, thanks to the phenomenal success of his enchanted world of Middle-Earth, which hosts both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, among others. If you’re a Tolkien fan who’s looking to move house, then you may want to consider buying a house the great writer himself lived in, for just a mere £4.5 million.

As the BBC reports, the house is located on Northmoor Road, Oxford, and was lived in by Tolkien and his family for 17 years from 1930 to 1947. The house, and many like it, were originally built in the 1920s to serve as homes for Britain’s leading academics, and has been described as “an important part of Oxford’s history”.

During his time there, Tolkien worked on both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and the building features a blue plaque commemorating Tolkien’s time there. The Tolkien family first lived at No. 22, but the writer later secured a lease on the house next door, which features six bedrooms, a larder, and breakfast room. The house was last purchased by a buyer in 2001 for £1.5 million, though it’s now on sale for £4,575,000 and is a Grade II-listed home.

The property is on the market via Breckon and Breckon and is described as being “situated on a generous plot within a leafy central north Oxford suburb”, and features “almost 4,000 sq ft of accommodation”.

Tolkien died in 1973 but he remains a giant in literature and his world of Middle-Earth has enjoyed continued success since its publication. The books have been adapted into Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed film series and it was recently announced by Amazon that a TV series is in the works.
