Karl Lagerfeld had a floor-to-ceiling sideways library

By March 1, 2019Libraries, News

The late Karl Lagerfeld was no stranger to out-of-the-box thinking and his library is no different!

In one of Lagerfeld’s two houses, situated side by side and only 2.5 metres apart, is his office. The room is minimalist and modern with stark red and black furniture and thousands of books lining the walls from floor to ceiling.

Of course that sounds like the perfect office or library, however Lagerfeld’s bookshelves look a bit different…

As quirky and dramatic as the walls of horizontal books look, it seems like it would be a real issue trying to get a book out from the bottom of the pile… But then perhaps aesthetics aren’t always practical.

According to an interview in Vogue, Lagerfeld was a very well-read man with an extensive collection of books, and his walls certainly reflect that- holding over 300,000 books. As well as a mix of novels and philosophy, Lagerfeld enjoyed poetry, and was able to read in four different languages. His favourite poet “above all!” was, surprisingly for some, the American poet Emily Dickinson.

Lagerfeld also owned an art and design bookshop in Paris, The 7L Bookshop, however they keep their books stacked the proper way.
