By February 12, 2020Adaptations, News

Matilda the Musical is a stage musical, adapted from Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel Matilda, by Dennis Kelly, directed by Matthew Marchus and with lyrics and music from Tim Minchin. The all singing and dancing version of Matilda’s story first came to stage in a 12-week trial run from November 2010 to January 2011, before being transferred to the West End in November 2013.

Matilda the Musical has received widespread critical acclaim, winning seven Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards. Now, news has been released that will excite Matilda fans who have not yet had the chance to see the musical on stage. In an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced that Matilda the Musical will be coming to the big and small screen.

Sony Pictures and streaming site, Netflix, are teaming up in a brilliant new collaboration to bring a film of Matilda the Musical to a wider audience. The film adaptation of Matilda the Musical will first get a full cinema and home video run exclusively in the UK before then becoming available to stream on Netflix around the world, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

It was Sony’s Tri-Star unit which first produced the 1996 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda which sadly did not do well at the box office but has become and remains to this day a fan favourite film, so we have high hopes for this latest production of Matilda the Musical.

There is no news yet on a release date for this adaptation of Matilda to Musical, and according to sources for The Hollywood Reporter, these details are still being worked out. However, we will stay close to the news and keep you informed when any further details on this production are released.
