Will Amazon Adapt the Three Body Problem?

By April 13, 2018Adaptations, News

The Hugo-winning Three Body Problem is an excellent novel and has pretty much been recommended by anyone who is anyone, including Obama who named it one of the books of his presidency.

The rights to the adaptation are owned by YooZoo Pictures, but it’s rumoured that Amazon has approached the company and is prepared to pay up to $1 billion to make the show, according to a report in the Financial Times.

Amazon is said to be hoping for a three season deal, making The Three Body Problem Amazon’s ‘Game of Thrones’, but we’ve heard no confirmation about Lui Cixin’s trilogy. Cixin also stated that he knew nothing about the project and as yet hadn’t been invited to work on it.

Amazon has been making some big budget deals of late, including their (very expensive) massive planned remake of The Lord of the Rings into a show for the streaming channel.

To make matters more confusing, YooZoo Pictures has claimed that they have spent years working on a film version of The Three Body Problem, stating in 2014 that five movies were planned with the first to be released in 2016. That date has come and gone, and IMBD is now listed as having the project release in 2018. However, we are relatively sure that filming hasn’t taken place so 2018 seems an impossible date.

Will YooZoo Pictures make the movie? Will it switch to Amazon? Will we finally see China’s most successful sci-fi novel finally adapted for screen? It seems these aren’t questions we’re getting the answers to right now, but we will be listening for more news with interest and bringing it to you as it breaks.
