16 Novels you loved despite the bad reviews

By September 14, 2015Discussion and Recommendations

Not every book is going to be the book for you, and not every book is going to be the book for everyone. There isn’t a novel out there that hasn’t had at least one bad review, but some seem to be like Marmite, you either love them or you hate them. So with that in mind we asked you for the novels you loved, despite the fact that they had got bad reviews and from that we have a list of thirteen books you loved that others hated.

Twilight Saga – Stephenie Meyer

Maybe unsurprisingly, the Twilight Saga came in first place, by a landslide too. It may have been slated by many but this was a best-selling series so many people must have loved it too!

50 Shades of Grey – E. L James

It started as Twilight fan fiction so maybe it’s not all that surprising to see 50 Shades of Grey quickly following Twilight in our list of books you loved that others hated.

50 Shades of Grey US
50 Shades of Grey UK

Gone Girl – Gillian Flynn

I personally loved this and almost everyone has something to say about it and it’s usually on opposite ends of the ‘Like’ scale so it comes as no surprise to find it just behind 50 Shades in our poll

Da Vinci Code – Dan Brown

One of three Dan Brown books to make the list, the Da Vinci Code was another massive bestseller, but it was slated as often as it was loved and it finds itself in fourth place here.

The Host – Stephenie Meyer

This is Meyer’s second entry to the list and I’m not surprised to find it further down as many of the reviews I’ve read have been pretty good! Enough of you loved it to find it in fifth place in our list!

And it was those five novels that pretty much dominated the replies, although also getting a few mentions each were:

A Million Little Pieces – James Frey
The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
Inferno – Dan Brown
The Casual Vacancy – J. K Rowling
Angels and Demons – Dan Brown
The Shack – William P. Young
Go Set a Watchman – Harper Lee
The Goldfinch – Donna Tartt
Flowers in the Attic – Virginia Andrews
Sookies Stackhouse – Charlaine Harris
The Lovely Bones – Alice Sebold

Thanks to everyone who replied, there were more than 50 books mentioned in total!

I haven’t read all of these, but I’ve read most of them All but three. I will not read the book ‘by’ Harper Lee.. I’m not a book snob, but there’s not a single book on this list that’s any good. All of the critics in the world can disagree.

A book is like art or food. What one likes another may not. Enjoy the journey. Dont over analysis. Read for pleasure not critical apraisal.
Sometimes you are drawn to a book because without tealising you are at that place at that time.
Just go with it. It is all and adventure.

You missed “Girl On A Train”! Worse book I have ever read after Stephen Kings “It”
