Outlander crosses a lot of genres, and as such the entire series gets plenty of miles on site and is suggested for many, many polls and reading lists. It won’t be topping this one though! Based on your love of this series, we asked for the books you would recommend to those who loved Outlander and from your replies we have eight books to try if you loved the series.

Into the Wilderness – Sara Donati
If you want another saga, this may well be perfect as Into the Wilderness is the first in a series of books. It has history, it has a love story and plenty of drama and might well be the perfect follow up series to Outlander.
Earth’s Children – Jean M. Auel
I guess the oldies never go out of fashion and Earth’s Children has proved a popular series, standing the test of time. I’ve read them all and while the early ones are wonderful, I felt the writing quality dropped off before the end.
The Time Traveller’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger
Not a series, but The Time Traveller’s Wife meets the historical element of Outlander and might be one you’d want to try if you loved the series.
Water for Elephants – Sara Gruen
Set during the Depression Era, Water for Elephants certainly meets the historical aspect. A love story to beat all the odds and may well appeal to those who love Outlander.
At the Water’s Edge – Sara Gruen
And from the same author is At the Water’s Edge, set in the Scottish Highlands at the end of World War II, it certainly gets the location right and might well appeal to those who love the Scottish series.
The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus has turned out to be one of those novels that is hard to genre, and it has that at least in common with Outlander. It was the hot book last year in our group, but it hasn’t yet made it to the top of my own TBR.
The Winter Sea – Susanna Kearsley
The Winter Sea is described as gothic historical fiction with suspense and romance thrown in. Sounds just like Outlander!
All Souls Trilogy – Deborah Harkness
Another series to finish you off, the All Souls Trilogy a historian and a reluctant witch, tying in magic and history into this trilogy.
Thankfully Diana Gabaldon is still writing, and there are hopefully more books to come in the Outlander-verse, but if you’re looking for something to fill the gaps, there are some great suggestions here!

Karen Moning’s Highlander books are wonderful if you enjoy time travel and Scottish history.
I loved the ‘All Souls Trilogy’ and so does my daughter. I have read them twice. I can’t wait to see what’s next from Debora Harkness. Jean Auel’s ‘Clan Of The Cave Bear’ and I agree with the comment … the writing diminished towards the end when the author became very ill and died.
Both of these series are by professional historians/antropologists and solid background in academia … I thought this made a big difference and their research is impeccable for the times.
My daughter loved Clan so much she named her daughter Ayla … and we have met a few Ayla’s.
