Using Comfort Reads to Get Through Covid19

During one of our regular early morning chats (I’d call it a meeting but that would be a grand term for what is actually just a moan/rant/catchup over Facebook Messenger) I mentioned to Kath that I was having problems reading, a great hardship as this is how I usually fall asleep each night.

I, like just about everyone else on this planet, have so much other stuff on my mind that concentrating on my book is at times almost impossible.

Kath agreed that she too is having the same issue and the conversation came round to re-reading, something easy, something comforting, could this be the solution? I decided to ask the members of The Cwts at Reading Addicts if they were feeling the same way and what their favourite go to comfort read would be.

We had lots of mentions for Harry Potter, not just the physical book but also the audiobook. The book is so familiar and the dulcet tones of Stephen Fry narrating are pure joy.

Several members mentioned Children’s books, including my go-to comfort reads, anything by Enid Blyton. In the category of Children’s books other suggestions were:

Arthur Ransome

The Chalet School Series

Black Beauty

Anne of Green Gables

The Chronicles of Narnia

Some suggested re-reading a classic, or maybe something read back in your school days, for example:

Lord of the Rings

Jane Austen

John Steinbeck

The Outlander Series

Agatha Christie

The other suggestions were for light easy reads, or something to make you laugh:

P. G. Wodehouse

Terry Pratchett

Marian Keyes

Maeve Binchy

Agatha Christie

Whatever you decide to read or re-read at this difficult time, we at For Reading Addicts hope that you are keeping safe and well and if you want to chat to someone about books and aren’t already a member pop along and join our friendly reading group The Cwts at Reading Addicts.

I was delighted to see your piece about comfort reading/ re-reading as I have just got to the stage of reading a new book today having been self-shielding since 5th March and haven’t left my flat. My main re-reads have been Dorothy L Sayers, Robert B Parker, Helene Hanff and Donna Leon.
