FRA Admin Reads: April 2017

By April 3, 2017Reading Habits

We’re into a new month, and now it’s time for that feature where you learn a little about us, as we feature our admin reads from the last month. When we’re not busy writing articles and reviews, we’re all usually found with our noses in a book, and here we round up what we’ve all been reading each month.

We love hearing about your reads too, and we’ll bring you the Hit of the Lits readers’ chart very soon, but for now here are our admin reads, the books we’ve loved (and hated) from the last month.

My reading has rather suffered this month for being pretty busy and I’ve only read one book! I’m at the very end of Mischling, started at the end of last month and it’s beautiful. Really beautiful written and an easy contender for my book of the year this year. Full review to follow, but this comes highly recommended by me!

Wow where did March go? This month my favourite read has been Burnt Shadows by Kamila Shamsie. I was so impressed by it that it has shot into my top 10 books of all time. This is the story of one woman’s life, following her from Japan during 1945, then onto India during partition and finally New York just after 9/11. I also read my first “steam punk” novel, not my usual genre but part of a reading challenge. Lady of Devices by Shelley Adina was an easy and quite enjoyable read, one day I hope to find the time to read more of the series.

I was a very lucky mum this Mother’s Day and received two excellent books- The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley, and Animal (The Autobiography of a Female Body) by Sara Pascoe. Sara Pascoe is hilarious and insightful so I am looking forward to delving into that one soon. I am currently reading The Watchmaker, and absolutely loving it. It is intriguing and has captured my imagination completely! Wonderful stuff.

Thom

I’ve been reading The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. I’m not really a religious person myself but I really don’t think it matters what your faith is when it comes to this book. The Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu discuss many aspects of modern life and how they approach them. The book isn’t preachy at all and it’s really nice to read how much the two seem to enjoy one another’s company.

We hope you have a good reading month!
