FRA Admin Reads – July 2016

By July 2, 2016Reading Habits

Our monthly admin reads section gives you a chance to get to know the team behind For Reading Addicts in a literary way, by letting you know about the books we’ve loved and the books we haven’t over the previous month.

Throughout the team, we all have different tastes and read across different genres. Some that may interest you, others that may not. We got together a few days ago to discuss our reads, and here’s what we said.

Kath

It’s been ages since I’ve read something that has really grabbed me so I picked up The Alchemist this month. The Alchemist has had rave reviews on the For Reading Addicts page for years, with many of you saying that it had changed your lives. I’m about half way through and it’s ok, but not as good as the hype. I’m only half way through so I’ll stick with it and let you know what I thought next month.

I’ve also been dipping into A Century of Cardiff by John O’ Sullivan, it’s about my hometown and it’s pretty fascinating. I picked it up at a charity shop a couple of years ago but it’s the first time I’ve picked it up.

I also have Inkdeath on my bedside. I loved Inkheart and Inkspell and have been saving the final book in the trilogy for ages but it’s just not grabbing me like the first two did.

I read Brent Weeks Night Angel Trilogy, Books 1 & 2 and found them to be brilliant. Very much along the lines of Robin Hobb with plenty of skullduggery and backstabbing going on in a typical fantasy world of horses and torches, will be reading book three as soon as it arrives.

Next was the much-anticipated The Fireman by Joe Hill. No matter how much I try to not compare him to his dad it’s almost impossible not to, but that’s not a bad thing and he definitely isn’t a clone. A post apocalyptic world is burning to the ground and what’s the best thing when there’s a fire? A Fireman of course!

Now I am halfway through End of Watch, Stephen King, the final book in the Bill Hodges trilogy, I already know Bill’s going to die and no, that’s not a spoiler. King said so himself. He has pancreatic cancer and that’s never a good thing. Here’s hoping that the famed King curved ball is the fact that Bill gets to live.

Also reading Locke and Key, a graphic novel by Joe Hill, which is brilliant, the illustrations are gorily beautiful and the story line is nail-bitingly good. And finally, opened Master and Margarita; that’s a few pages a night jobbie. Yik

Rosie

I’m reading Amy Schumer The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo. I expected it to be funny, if a bit forced, but actually it’s a great read and laugh-snortingly funny.

So that’s it, the books we loved and hated during June. See you again next month!

I’m glad I read The Alchemist, didn’t get all the hype either but I didn’t loathe it so that makes it OK in my mind. I’m dying to read The Fireman, my favorite genre and now a favorite author. I agree, I can definitely see similarities between Hill and his father but very different too. And, I didn’t want to read the Amy Schumer book for the same reasons as you Rosie, but now you’ve made me want to read it!
