Neil Gaiman to Reimagine Jim Henson’s “Storyteller”

By February 24, 2019News, Television

Fans of Jim Henson’s iconic anthology series, Storyteller from the 1980s will be thrilled to hear that we may be seeing a comeback! Author Neil Gaiman (America Gods, Good Omens) is in talks with Freemantle and the Jim Henson Company to develop a re-imagined version of the show for television.

The original show was inspired by Henson’s daughter Lisa who was studying folklore and mythology in university. The original version went live in 1987 with creatures in Jim Henson’s Creature Shop retelling various European folk tales with a mysterious elfin storyteller, played by the late John Hurt.

The new incarnation of the show will be written and executively produced by Neil Gaiman, who has already proven his interest in mythology with books such as Norse Mythology, American Gods, and Anansi Boys. He says the new version will be an updated version, designed to work with today’s ‘binging’ viewer, which indicates it will be available on one of the streaming services available.

He also wants to divulge further into the actual Storyteller, who he is, and why he is telling these stories. Gaiman has loved the Storyteller for a long time and when he met Lisa Henson in 1991 told her of his love for the original series. The two have bonded over the love of mythology and now it looks like we may all benefit with this fantastic reimagining.

There’s no news yet as to when the new version of The Storyteller will go into production, or where it will air, but we’ll be watching with interest and will bring you more news as it breaks!
