Promoting Literacy: The Women’s Prison Book Project

By December 30, 2015Culture, Video

I’d like to think that we promote literacy in some small way here at For Reading Addicts, and as we grow I’ve been looking for some inspiration for things we might get involved in in the future. While browsing I stumbled across a brilliant literary project happening in the U.S with The Women’s Prison Book Project.

What a great cause! How many of us attribute discovering literature as a main reason for our successes? How often do we speak of how reading changed our lives? There really is no one in a better place to want to make life-changes than as a woman in prison, and often this is the first real introduction to literature in their lives.

The Women’s Prison Book Project has been changing lives since 1994, offering free reading materials to women and transgender persons in prisons. They understand the connections between the prison system and access to education and are working hard to break down those walls with this amazing project.

You can see more about the project, and listen to the reactions of some of the prisoners who have benefitted from it in the video below, and find out more and how you can help at The Women’s Prison Book Project website.
