Amazon to Open Physical Bookstore in New York in 2017

By January 5, 2017Bookshops, News

You may recall that, as we reported in 2015, there was quite a buzz about the fact Amazon opened its first physical bookshop in Seattle, Washington. The store differed from other high street book stores in that it uses data from Amazon such as customer ratings, sales totals and Goodreads popularity in order to know what to keep in stock and what to recommend to customers.

Those book lovers among you who live in the Big Apple may be pleased to learn that, as The Wall Street journal reports, a new Amazon bookshop is set to be opened in the Shops at Columbus Circle mall area in Time Warner Center on 59th Street.

This new store will be the fourth Amazon bookshop to be opened in the United States with stores being located in Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and San Diego, California. Two more stores are also currently being planned to be opened in Massachusetts and Chicago.

Amazon is often blamed for the decline in physical bookstores since it made purchasing books online easy. Some have argued that it’s nice to see more physical bookshops being opened, but others would rather those stores weren’t owned by the corporation that saw stores being shut down in the first place.

It seems Amazon is only looking at opening stores in the United States at the moment but, if the venture is successful, we’ll no doubt see stores open across the globe.
