Rowling Readers Left Disappointed by Not Reading the Details

By September 8, 2016Children's Literature, News

It’s barely a month since Harry Potter and The Cursed Child was released, and while the script has been generally well received, there were complaints from readers who hadn’t realised it was a script and not a novel, with many even saying they wish they had waited for the novel.

Newsflash, you’ll be waiting a long time as it was clearly stated from the first announcement that the eighth instalment of the series would only be released in script form, for people who couldn’t get along to see the show.

Now ‘disappointing’ Rowling is in the news again, from readers who are complaining about the ‘Brand new Harry Potter stories’ released this week. Some readers are complaining there’s no information about Potter in there, and others, that they lack new material. However, when we announced the launch of these books a few weeks ago, it was clear they were collating information from Pottermore, and putting them into a collectable format. In fact, such was the confusion that Rowling herself clarified on Twitter that the new stories were not about Potter, and that they weren’t really ‘new’ at all.

If it was any other situation, I’d sigh and complain about general educational decline, but guys, you’re readers! The very people who define themselves as people who enjoy to read, caught out because they didn’t read a simple description!

While on a smaller scale, we often have people on our own social media pages who comment having never read the article, in fact a recent study suggests that around 60% of commentors haven’t even clicked the link!

If you don’t wish to be disappointed by a format, or new release, it’s important to make sure you know what you’re buying before pre-order, it hardly seems fair to blame anyone else afterwards, and in the same respect, don’t be surprised if you get things wrong when you comment based on the title and a picture!

Just as a little experiment include the name of a shape in your reply to show you read to the end!

I circled around the purchase of the “new book”, but as it CLEARLY stated that it was a script, I passed on purchased and borrowed from the public library.

    Dodecahedron.
I knew the cursed child would be in script format. And that it wasn’t written by JKR. As a Harry Potter fan, I read every article about Harry Potter to the end. Can get enough lol.

Circle and I loved the script!!! But agree that if you’re truly a reader, you should have read where it says very clearly that it’s a script on the cover.

I think this is a new evil of contemporary days, there’s too much information and people don’t really pay attention to what they are reading. We’ll become squares if we keep going this way 😉

  • Stamatia Daroglou says:

    Square most certainly.

  • Debbie McCarthy says:

Ah, the eternal triangle of the reader, publisher and the author!

  • Yoanna says:

    triangle.

I agree, I keep reading articles and comments from ppl complaining about the new “book” when it’s clear they’re misinformed. I also read somewhere that fans where accusing JK Rowling of being a homophobe for not making Sirius gay… but no one mentions that Dumbledore is, contradiction much? So all the misunderstandings and angry comments can be attributed to readers WHO DON’T READ!!

Does “heart” count as a shape?

P.S.: Sorry for any mistakes in my spelling, English is not my first language.

When my son was little he called octagons ocoders. It has remained my favorite shape since then!

  • Penny Williams says:

“Readers” who don’t read are one side of my polygon of pet peeves. I’m a librarian and so many people have checked out the book and come back to say with surprising awareness, “This was the play, not the book! I wanted the book!” tch, tch, tch. (smh)

Triangle with a circle in it. Of course. I knew it was to be a script. But I happen to love reading scripts so no issues for me!! Keep them coming.
