The Shakespeare Memorial Room was created and designed by John Henry Chamberlain in 1882 to house the Shakespeare Memorial Library.
The room was dismantled in 1974 and stored in a depot. In 1986 it was moved to Birmingham Polytechnic (now BCU) but it was rarely open to the public.
When construction on Birmingham’s new library began in 2010 arcitect Francine Houben was asked to include a space for the room, so she placed a gold rotunda on the top of the building where the room is now housed.
The room was cleaned restored using a lot of the original materials and carefully placed in it’s new home where it is now open to visitors from all over the world.
